Westport has two Metro-North stations on the New Haven Line, and the differences between them matter to a commuter.
Westport station, at 1 Railroad Place in Saugatuck, is 44.2 miles from Grand Central Terminal. It has 1,454 parking spaces and recorded 2,625 weekday boardings in 2018, the most recent count we found.
Green’s Farms station, at 2 Post Office Lane, is 47.2 miles out, with 466 spaces and 846 weekday boardings in the same count.
The ticket
Both Westport stations are in the same fare zone. The MTA’s current fare table lists a monthly ticket at $440.50, a weekly at $156.50, a peak one-way at $22.75, an off-peak one-way at $16.75 and a day pass at $41. Connecticut fares rose in two steps over the past year, and the Westport Journal’s 2025 projection of the monthly fare after the second increase was lower, at $405.50, so confirm the current price in the MTA TrainTime app before you budget.
For the same reason, check running times in TrainTime rather than relying on anyone’s memory, including ours. Metro-North’s current timetable took effect March 29, 2026, and express patterns change with each timetable.
The parking permit
The parking permit is the harder part. The town sells annual railroad parking permits for $400 plus tax, or $425.40, for a single car, and $531.75 for a two-car shared permit. The town’s railroad parking FAQ has described the waiting list as just under two years. Applying costs $35, and permits renew every April.
Until your number comes up, you will need another plan. Parking at the stations is free on weekdays from 3 p.m. to 7 a.m. and all day on weekends and holidays. Since Jan. 20, 2026, the fine for parking in a permit space without a permit has been $50.
Put your name on the waiting list the week you close, and ask the town whether you can apply sooner.
By car
Westport sits between two highways. Interstate 95 has two Westport exits, 17 for Routes 33 and 136 and 18 for the Sherwood Island Connector. The Merritt Parkway’s Westport exits were renumbered in 2025 and are now Exits 20 and 21, formerly 41 and 42. Renumbering of I-95’s exits is expected after work on the Merritt, which runs through 2030.
Choosing a neighborhood for the train
If the train is the point, proximity to one of the two stations matters more than any other feature. Saugatuck surrounds Westport station. Green’s Farms station serves the Greens Farms side of town. Both stations draw drivers from across town.
Two pending projects could affect the Saugatuck approach. The state prefers to replace the Cribari Bridge on Route 136, with construction no earlier than 2030, and the town has rezoned Saugatuck Center around the station for smaller-scale development.
